Plein Air

Jane Romanishko works primarily en plein air—a practice that deepens her emotional connection to her subject matter. Drawn to the energy and poetry of light, she seeks not to replicate a scene but to capture her own reaction to it. In her pursuit of balance between reality and impressionistic interpretation, she deliberately leaves room for mystery, inviting viewers to complete the image with their imagination.

Jane was born in Russia and holds a Master of Architecture.  Her undergraduate degree is in Art Education, where she studied art history, painting, and drawing in Eastern European traditions.

Jane has participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions, including the Calgary Stampede Western Showcase, the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas and Reflection West in Hyatt Regency, Calgary.  She has received numerous awards and recognitions including the Nicholas de Grandmaison Award for Excellence in Pastel Portraiture from the CIPA National Open Portrait Exhibition. She is member of PAC (Pastel Artists Canada).

Jane is presenting at the 16th International Association of Pastel Societies Convention, Albuquerque, New Mexico, 16-21 June 2026. It is billed as the “Biggest Pastel Party on the Planet.

She divides her year between Calgary summers—dedicated to painting, sculpture, and teaching—and Mexican winters, where she facilitates art retreats. Proficient in oil, acrylic, watercolour, and pastel, her practice is defined by a genuine commitment to both creating and instructing art.
